NetWorks Tips & Tricks: Managing Your Privacy Settings

One thing you want to be sure to do when using AMSN NetWorks is check out the options on the preferences and privacy settings page. To get to this page, click on "My Directory," then "Preferences and Privacy Settings" on the left-hand side.

From this panel, you can control how much information you wish to share with other members via AMSN NetWorks, as well as what email notifications you receive.

By default, all members are included in the member directory. This means other members can find you via AMSN NetWorks, but only contact you through the site, and they will not have access to your personal address or email address. There is a matrix of options on this page that enables you to select what items you want to be visible on your profile. For each item, your choices are "My Contacts," "Members," "Public," or "Nobody." AMSN has pre-selected a set of these options for you, but you can edit each of these on this page. Here is what the choices mean:
  • My Contacts - If you select this option, only those members who you have added as a contact will see this item on your profile. To add someone as a contact, both you and the other party must accept the invitation.
  • Members - If you select this option for an item, all AMSN members will see this item when viewing your profile. Someone could view your profile after reading a blog entry you wrote, finding you in the membership directory, or seeing you are connected with a colleague.
  • Public - Public means nearly the same thing as members. Anyone who is logged in will see this item. AMSN NetWorksmay include some individuals who are not actually members of AMSN, such as MSNCB Committee leaders or National Office staff, and these people would be included in the "Public" group but not the "Members" group.
  • Nobody - If you select this, no one but you will ever see this item. If you do not want anyone to have access to something like a personal phone number, select this option.
Please keep in mind that when you look at your profile on AMSN NetWorks, you are not seeing what other members see. You get access to your full profile, so you see everything from the AMSN database! To monitor what other members see, just check the options on this panel.

AMSN NetWorks has been designed to facilitate networking between members, but we want you to be in control of your information and level of involvement. Please be sure to review your options and choose what works for you. Keep in mind that you can change these settings at any time and the change will go into effect immediately.
