AMSN Announces Fellows Program at 31st Annual Convention

Press Release

Recognizing exemplary leadership and service, AMSN is implementing a Fellows Program providing members the opportunity to celebrate individuals who have made a significant impact on AMSN and the medical-surgical nursing community.

SEWELL, NEW JERSEY – October 3, 2022 - The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), the nation’s only specialty nursing organization dedicated to the practice of medical-surgical nursing, announced the AMSN Fellows Program at its 31st Annual Convention in San Antonio. The Program is designed to recognize those individuals who have made a significant impact on AMSN and the medical-surgical nursing community through volunteer service and leadership, promotion of certification, research activities, and publications.

The AMSN Fellows Program will serve as an honorary recognition and a call to continued leadership and service within the medical-surgical nursing community.

Aligning with AMSN’s strategic goals, the announcement of the AMSN Fellows Program will celebrate four vital components in AMSN’s continued stride to celebrate legacy leaders in the development of AMSN, as well as the medical-surgical nursing community.

  • The Medical-Surgical nurse will be a well-equipped, highly respected professional with career satisfaction and a strong professional identity.
  • The global healthcare community will look to AMSN as the thought leader on all aspects of med-surg nursing practice through advocacy, education, certification, and scholarship.
  • AMSN shapes the field of medical-surgical nursing through a diverse workforce and equitable opportunities for all nurses.
  • AMSN’s health and continued organizational growth will be advanced through the effective integration of technology, systems, and people.

“AMSN is excited to launch this important recognition program for dedicated medical-surgical leaders that exemplify significant service to AMSN and the specialty of medical-surgical nursing” states Summer Bryant, DNP, RN, CENP, CMSRN, AMSN President. “Medical-surgical nursing is an integral specialty in healthcare and we felt it was imperative to recognize the significant accomplishments of med-surg nurses as demonstrative of their impact on health care and patient care.”

The initial 10 Fellows will be selected by the AMSN Board of Directors based on established criteria. Only current AMSN voting members are eligible to be nominated. Nominations may be submitted by an AMSN member or nominees may self-nominate. Once nominated, nominees choosing to apply must complete a Fellows application and submit a curriculum vitae and two letters of recommendation. The Selection Committee, composed of Fellows in good standing, reviews all applications and selects the final candidates. Selected fellows are recognized at an Induction Ceremony held at the Annual Convention.

"AMSN is excited to launch our Fellows program and recognize the inaugural class of Fellows of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (FAMSNs),” reports Terri Hinkley, EdD, MBA, BScN, RN, CAE, CEO of AMSN. “We are so fortunate to have such outstanding leadership within AMSN, serving both the association and medical-surgical nursing more broadly. We look forward to celebrating our first cohort of FAMSNs at the annual convention in Las Vegas in 2023.

Once selected, Fellows are expected to continue to be high-level contributors to AMSN. Individually, Fellows serve as authors, speakers, researchers, mentors, volunteer leaders, advocacy supporters, and advocates on behalf of the medical-surgical nursing community. Fellows may be invited to participate in strategic planning and related conversations with the Board of Directors on behalf of AMSN.
